PT Design worked closely with Brown Falconer and Kennett Builders to realise a vision that reimagines aged care through the innovative “small house” model, where eight individual homes-each accommodating up to ten residents-are arranged around a central “main street” spine. This approach creates intimate, domestic-scale living environments that promote independence and social interaction, while the central hub provides communal activity areas, a dining room, consulting rooms, a commercial kitchen, hairdresser, and gymnasium.
PT Design’s engineering solutions were integral to achieving the architectural ambition. The structure features a residential-style construction with a signature curved structural steel spine that elegantly connects the building wings, creating a welcoming and cohesive flow throughout the site. The undercroft area utilises precast retaining walls to negotiate the sloping terrain, while suspended slabs and large-span structural steel allow for expansive courtyard areas that serve as vibrant outdoor gathering spaces. Gabion retaining walls define the main water storage area, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The entry is marked by a dramatic, curved feature canopy, offering a sense of arrival and shelter.
PT Design’s contribution ensured that the built form not only met stringent safety and accessibility requirements but also supported the ethos of engagement, enablement, and community that defines Summerhill.
