New meets old in another stylish Max Pritchard Gunner Architects extension.

Max Pritchard Gunner Architects, in collaboration with PT Design, delivered a modern two-storey addition to Ibbetson House—a heritage-listed property that balances historical character with modern amenity. Located on a site just outside Adelaide’s CBD, the project includes a new basement level, swimming pool, and striking steel and timber framed extension that respectfully contrasts and complements the original residence.

PT Design’s engineering solutions were central to resolving the design’s complexity. A reinforced, piled walled basement was constructed to accommodate a large subterranean living space and car lift. The above-ground structure employs a robust yet elegant system of exposed structural steel framing and timber cladding.  Prefabricated floor panels, used to reduce floor depth and span significant width, enabled rapid construction and precise detailing while minimising disruption to the existing building fabric.

Through close collaboration, PT Design and Max Pritchard Gunner Architects ensured that Ibbetson House retains its historic significance while evolving to meet the needs of modern living, seamlessly uniting the architectural vision with engineering excellence.
