Westminster Innovation Hub

Completed in 2021 as part of the school’s ambitious campus masterplan, this three-storey building was designed by Brown Falconer and delivered by Sarah Constructions. The Hub is purpose-built to foster hands-on learning across a spectrum of disciplines, including engineering, architecture, food technology, fashion, materials, design, IT, and science, supporting Westminster’s vision for future-focused, holistic education.

PT Design’s engineering solutions were pivotal in bringing this dynamic facility to life. The structure is anchored by a large-scale raft and pile footing system, providing the stability required for the building’s expansive open-plan spaces and advanced specialist laboratories. Multi-level construction features large-span topped Deltacore planks, which minimize the need for internal propping and allow for flexible, reconfigurable learning environments. Precast shear walls and cores deliver robust lateral stability, while a structural steel frame supports the building’s distinctive brick and glazed facades, accented with feature screens and a signature curved framing element that gives the exterior its contemporary edge.

Inside, the Innovation Hub offers 21 classrooms, 10 dedicated science labs, a 183-square-metre commercial kitchen, and seven design labs equipped with 3D printers and industry-standard technology. Flexible breakout zones and collaborative spaces are interwoven throughout, encouraging students to design, build, create, and collaborate in real-world contexts. The building is linked to existing school facilities via a feature steel stair and a bridge, ensuring seamless integration within the campus and supporting Westminster’s commitment to a connected learning community.

The Innovation Hub has been widely recognised, including a Commendation at the 2021 Learning Environments Australia Awards, and is celebrated by students and staff alike for its inspirational atmosphere-“Just being in this building makes me want to study science, it makes me want to inquire about things”. PT Design’s engineering expertise ensured that every element of the structure supports Westminster’s mission to equip young minds with the tools and spaces they need to achieve more than they ever thought possible.
